Hmm… An interesting beginning to a very serious discussion as to what driving behaviors should be implemented in Smart Driving Cars. Do “Autonomous cars have to drive similarly to how humans drive,” Redzic said. “We have to humanize autonomous driving for it to gain acceptance.” Program bad behavior to “gain acceptance”??? Really??? Other drivers simply flip me off when I drive poorly. They have no desire to accept my bad driving. More seriously… The only purpose of a “Stop” sign is to provide the driver with the proper time and vantage point to ensure that there is no approaching intersection conflict. (It certainly is not to waste the energy that is consumed in accelerating from zero instead of some positive speed value. Nor is it to waste the excess time that is imposed by the maneuver.) However, if the automated car’s sensors and/or communications systems have determined that no conflict exists before the automated car comes to a complete stop, why should it be required to come to complete stop? Also, when uncongested and in good weather, no one drives anywhere on the New Jersey Turnpike at or below the Speed Limit. If Smart Driving Cars are programmed to always adhere to the Speed Limit, then it is a good thing that no one would buy such cars; else, such cars would likely induce other cars to cause accidents as they “flew” past them. What we need is “Truth in Transportation” with respect to the rules and regulations. Since human drivers tend to drive at speeds that are the highest of {safe enough, comfortable enough, chances I’ll get a ticket are as large as I can stomach}, maybe we’ll need the digital map provider to maintain and distribute Safety_v_Speed; Comfort_v_Speed; TicketProbability_v_Speed measures for each and every automated road segment. Then the car owner can simply select (or his/her BIG DATA system can Optimally Learn) the desired values of Safety, Comfort and TicketProbability and voila the Desired Driving Speed is readily computable on each and every roadway segment where my car can operate automatically. Wyrough, Alexander Penn Hill Jr.: A National Disaggregate Transportation Demand Model for the Analysis of autonomous Taxi Systems
Abstract: Extended to the entire United States is Mufti’s New Jersey-centric disaggregate personal trip synthesizer. Using data drawn from the U.S. 2010 Census, as well as other sources, are used to synthesize 308,745,538 individuals with specific personal attributes that match census block profiles and create the 1,009,322,835 trips these individuals take across the U.S. on a typical work day. With precise spatial and temporal attributes that mimic actual personal travel behavior and assemble to reflect aggregate reference sources these trips comprise a ready data set to appropriately analyze the efficacy of novel transportation systems, including autonomous Taxis. Specifically, any realized data set generated by this synthesizer is an appropriate basis on which to gain insights into a national system of autonomous taxis that could (a) match the comfort and convenience of personal cars, (b) exceed the accessibility of mass transit, and (c) deliver wide-ranging benefits such as alleviated congestion, substantially reduced pollution and energy needs, and increased vehicle safety. Lee, Eileen: Uncovering Systemic Corruption in the ER: An Empirical Analysis of Motor Vehicle-Related Hospital Bill and their Impact on Insurance Companies
Abstract: With the advent of automated and assisted vehicle technology, the prospect of significantly decreasing motor vehicle accidents is imminent. However, accidents resulting in emergency room visits provide revenue for hospitals by charging automobile insurance companies for services to treat injured individuals. Statistical methods are used to investigate discrepancies in charges associated with motor vehicle accident injuries among different payers including: automobile insurance providers, Medicare, Medicaid, self-pay, and others. Charges for treatment of similar injuries with different causes are also evaluated. Results from 2011 data for New Jersey show that patients admitted to the emergency room (ER) after falling or being struck have significantly less expensive medical bills than patients that enter the ER from a motor vehicle accident. Rhodes, Brandon Xavier: An Analysis of Economically Efficient Insurance Schemes for Automated Vehicle
Abstract: Automated vehicles have the potential to have a profound impact on the automobile insurance industry. Preliminary research suggests that various automation systems are correlated with a drastic reduction in the frequency of insurance claims. However, American companies have yet to offer unique plans for customers who own vehicles equipped with an automation system, thereby resulting in economic inefficiency.
This thesis suggests various insurance schemes that are designed to insure automated vehicles in an economically efficient manner. First, this thesis provides an overview of the automobile insurance industry and an overview of automated vehicles. Afterwards, the dilemma automated vehicles pose to current liability laws is also examined. This is because the legal treatment of vehicles equipped with automation systems will have a significant effect on how they are insured. Next, before offering suggested insurance schemes, the results of a preliminary analysis on the effect of automation systems on insurance claims are examined. The thesis concludes with a theoretical analysis of the impact automation systems will have on various sectors of the economy once they achieve greater market penetration. Read more
Ding, Amy: Autonomous Transit Systems in Practice: An Exploration in Door-to-Door Transit in North San Jose
Abstract: Although Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and autonomous vehicle technologies have presented viable transportation solutions for many years already, the public investment in these technologies is still quite minimal. Two key factors prohibiting this transition process are cost and public perception. Using San Jose, CA as a case study, investigated are possible transition factors in the planned re-zoning and development that can lead to a harmony between door-to-door transit and planned communities. The results from the case study can be applied to other areas around the country interested in investing in a new autonomous transit system, to serve as examples that will push forward national adoption and the creation of more successful planned communities. MIT And Stanford Researchers Show Robotaxis Could Replace Private Cars And Public Transit
Chunka Mui Apr. 17 “…Someday, when fully autonomous vehicles are a reality, private car ownership and public transportation might plummet in favor of faster, better and cheaper mobility-on-demand services fulfilled by driverless cars. Imagine Uber powered by fleets of Google self-driving cars.
Such services underlie intriguing future scenarios where “robotaxis” provide door-to-door service while enabling significant reductions in transportation cost, enhancing mobility for millions saddled with limited access to private and public transportation, relieving congestion, and reducing the need for parking…” Referring to the paper that follows: “…In Singapore, the researchers applied their methods to extensive governmental data on travel patterns, traffic flows and road networks to simulate a large-scale robotaxi system. Rather than just replacing car traffic, the researchers show that a robotaxi system could handle all transportation needs—including private and public cars, taxis, scooters, buses, trains, etc.
Yes, you read that right. Their analysis showed that a fleet of 250,000 robotaxis could replace all modes of personal transportation and fulfill the transportation needs of the entire Singapore population. hmmm… Chunka refers to the following paper and most of the comments are on the source paper, below; however, while aTaxis “could handle” all trips, so could the existing public transportation system. It would just mean more walking, waiting and crowding that may or may not be worse than the waiting, add circuity (and crowding) that Singaporians would have to endure to fit into just an aTaxi system. It is a shame that the authors discarded walking, scooters and trains for trips that are actually best served in whole or in part by these existing modes of transport. In our investigation of the opportunities for aTaxis to serve all New Jersey’s 32 million daily person-trips we found that about 2.2 million walked or cycled and only 0.044 million used just the rail system (accessing both trips ends using walking to/from the train station); however, 1.4 million person trips were best served “multi-modally” using aTaxis to get to or from the nearest train station and walking from to the other. This would represent a 5X increase in the use of the NJ Transit rail system. Obviously, the synergy between aTaxis and conventional rail would mean a substantial increase in rail’s frequency of service ensuring that these potential customers would be well served leading to the realization of these expectations. As a case study, we consider replacing all modes of personal transportation in a city such as Singapore with a fleet of shared automated vehicles, able to drive themselves, e.g., to move to a customer’s location. Using actual transportation data, our analysis suggests a shared-vehicle mobility solution can meet the personal mobility needs of the entire population with a fleet whose size is approximately 1/3 of the total number of passenger vehicles currently in operation.” Read more

- The Forbes article is grandly-titled, but neither the academic-paper nor the article actually ‘show’ what the article-title says is shown. For me to be convinced that I’ve been ‘shown’ that robotaxis can replace private cars & transit, I’d need to see a realistic pathway to get from 2014 to ‘there’ that addresses the reasons why we are where we are in 2014 (and they’re much wider than just the tech we have available in 2014) (What
is the distribution of wait-times for today’s automobile and scooter trips in Singapore? Also because the problem is so non-linear, and non Gaussian the paper should talk about (display) the wait time distribution of all of the individual trips and not just the first moment. What about the tail? Also “wait” is not the only concern. What about the walk-access distance distribution and the imposed circuity required to achieve the high ride-sharing and low walk-access distance distribution. Alain)
- The academic article says it shows that 300K a-taxi vehicles (the largest fleet the authors considered) in Singapore would result in expected wait times of 15-minutes during the peak Am and PM hours. Of course this will be a distribution so some sizable fraction of travelers must wait in excess of 15-min, some small fraction well in excess of it. The avg US commute is 25 minutes — if I’m the typical 25-minute commuter, you’ve got to really put the hard sell on me to convince me to accept that my commute will increase in duration by 60% on average — and sometimes much longer but I won’t actually know this until near-real-time on any given day. By comparison of waiting times, the headways on the busy London tube lines are something like 2 minutes during busy periods (though granted sometimes you need to wait for several trains to pass due to crowding. Alain’s comment: I, of course, welcome others evaluating the mobility and societal implications of aTaxi (autonomous Taxi) public transportation systems and assessing their opportunity to be the dominant personal mobility system. The conclusion that Singapore’s mobility needs could be served with 1/3 of today’s vehicles is comparable to our findings that New Jersey’s mobility could be served with about 1/3 the VMT. We are, of course, using a very different measure: VMT rather than fleet size and New Jersey is very different than Singapore. Moreover, our approach was to assess the viability of aTaxi service individually to each of 32M or so trips that transpire on a typical weekday in New Jersey and to move each and everyone of those trips by a combination of walking, biking, aTaxiing and NJ_Transit_Railing. Since we analyze each trip we have the opportunity to measure the amount of walking, biking, occupancy in each aTaxi, the circuity imposed on each aTaxi accommodating each shared ride and the amount of delay that was imposed on each trip while an aTaxi waits for a ride-sharing opportunity. The fact that the study talks about households, rather than individual travelers strongly suggests to me that the inherent aggregation that is contained in their modelling process enormously biases their results. I’ll go out on a limb and say that their result of “one-shared car every 12.3 households” is not even close to being achievable and is a total aberration of the inappropriate aggregation of trips that is implied by their methodology. Travel demands are by individuals, not households. each member goes different places at different times (unless they are serving as a chauffeur to another family member, in which enormous circuity is imposed on the chauffeur. The fact that they do not show aTaxi occupancy distributions as a function of time, and do “rebalancing” every 30 minutes rather than continuously also leads me to seriously questioning their findings. I simply do not believe that the real travel demand in Singapore is lined up so nicely, or is so short, that everything cascades into the center in the morning and out to the periphery in the evening and that everything lines up so well that one car can serve the travel needs of 30+ people during the peak travel times. C’Mon Man! This deserves to be in half-baked. Alain

Hmmm… As I wrote last week with respect to GM, the industry can not respond in this manner during the evolution of SmartDrivingCars. “Defects” are inevitable, as will improvements to the systems. In fact, instead of a “defect recall”, the industry might create a “performance enhancement” recall process where software upgrades and some hardware upgrades may be made to the systems to improve their performance. The industry might/should be able to charge for these improvements. This would be like installing new and better “wiper blades”. Not that the old ones didn’t work, the new ones work better. And the industry could charge for it. A whole new revenue source. Your SmartDrivingCar could get a real “tune up”. :-) Alain
